Seven Questions with Joel Carter

May 29, 2017 | Blog, Spotlight

1. Why are you excited to speak at TEDxWinnipeg?

Being back home in Winnipeg for the event, contributing as part of a great diverse group of speakers, wonderful organization and steering committee – and the opportunity to share some important stories of hope and healing.

2. What is your idea worth spreading?

The power and magic of stories at the end of life – and what it teaches us about ‘what’s most important’ and how those stories impact end stage symptoms of dying patients.

3. What motivates you?

Creative process, the search for meaning and purpose, hope and healing … love and connection. ‘The Stories.’

4. Who inspires you, and why?

My father – Stefan Carter – a Holocaust Survivor. Also a physician, researcher, author, professor, (taught my  medical class during med school) musician, avid reader, and badminton fanatic who just competed at National Badminton event in Winnipeg in his age class – 89. He was a dedicated care giver and husband to my mother who had a long chronic illness prior to dying, loving father to myself and my brother Andrew … an amazing man. He always reminds me to take one day at a time, not take myself too seriously.  His story is in the Museum of Human Rights – Holocaust Exhibit – he survived the Warsaw Ghetto.

5. What’s the best gift anyone ever gave you?

My wife Natalia, who carried and birthed two beautiful children – a beautiful daughter Anouk who is 10 years old now, and a beautiful active boy Alec who is 7. I adore my children and family.

6. What’s on your playlist at the moment?

Bruce Cockburn, Martyn Joseph, Bajofondo, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Tom Cochrane, Coldplay, Peter Framptom, The Guess Who, BTO, Garnet Rogers, Alex Ubago, Robbie Williams, Stephen Fearing, Oka, Kim Churchill, Stuart McLean, Stevie Wonder, Shawn Colvin, Ruth Moody, Kelly Joe Phelps, Joel Farfard.
