6 Ways to Host the Best TEDxWinnipeg Viewing Party

May 31, 2018 | Blog

We’re only a few weeks away from TEDxWinnipeg 2018, which means we only have 13 days until this year’s speakers challenge us to think outside of our comfort zones, consider new approaches to solving our problems, and feel inspired to make a difference in our community

(This is a great time to remind you to register to attend before the last few spots sell out!)

TEDxWinnipeg is one of the best ways to connect with local thinkers and meet people working hard to make the world a better place, but sometimes attending in-person just isn’t an option.

Enter: The TEDxWinnipeg Viewing Party. The easiest way for you to experience all the excitement of TEDxWinnipeg 2018 from the comfort of your class, board room, or living room.

Getting started is easy! All you need is:

  • A space with a strong internet connection.
  • A screen where you can display the TEDx Winnipeg Livestream.
  • Some comfortable seating.
  • Some fellow creatives to share in the experience!

Be the Host With the Most

While there’s certainly no replacing the excitement of being at a TEDxWinnipeg event, there are lots of ways that you can add some flair to your viewing party that will help make it something to remember.

Check out some ways to make your TEDxWinnipeg 2018 viewing party something special:

1. Host a Potluck

New ideas will work up an appetite! Ask your guests to bring dishes for lunch and snacks to share with the group. Since this year’s theme is “Challenge” why not use your viewing party as an opportunity to try a new dish to share with the group?

2. Bring Your Ideas Worth Swapping

Ask each of your guests to bring something that inspires them to share an idea with the group. It could be a journal with a poem, a news article that inspired them to take action, or a recording of a thing their kid said that made them stop and think about the world in a new way – the sky’s the limit!

3. Use Name Tags

… even if you know everyone attending! TEDx is a great opportunity to talk to people and learn something new about one another, so don’t shy away from the opportunity to get to know your guests a bit better. Include a section on the tag called “Talk to me about…” and ask guests to share three things they love to discuss – whether it’s slam poetry, sci-fi or social media.

4. Track Hashtags Using a Second Screen

If you have another screen available, cue up the TEDx Twitter feed or the feed for one of our hashtags – #TEDxWinnipeg and #TEDxwpg2018. Tweet a photo of your viewing party and join the conversation throughout the day!

5. Sketch It Out!

One great way to see how different attendees interpret each speaker’s talk is to ask them to sketch out what comes to mind while each speaker is onstage. Grab cheap notepads from the dollar store and hand them out to guests when they arrive, and compare after each talk for entertaining and thought-provoking conversation!

6. Schedule Time to Share Ideas

TEDxWinnipeg 2018 isn’t just about our speakers; it’s also about using their talks as an opportunity to have conversations about topics that challenge us and make us think differently. With that in mind, make sure to set aside for some idea-sharing your viewing party. You could even assign each attendee to share their thoughts about one speaker’s topic for an improv, on-the-spot talk!
