Five Questions with Brian Bowman

What motivates you?

I’m motivated by leaders who understand the true power of action-oriented collaboration, especially those who can work with others despite their differences in order to affect positive change. Oh… and Heavy Metal music!

What do you do for a living and why?

I’m a partner with Winnipeg’s Pitblado Law. I’m a nationally recognized leader in privacy, access to information & social media matters. My work is all about protecting people’s rights and ensuring government bodies release information to the public to hold decision makers accountable. I also fight for children and their families who are victims of cyber-bullying.

Which TED talk do you think everyone should watch?

Why are you excited to speak at TEDxManitoba?

I’m thrilled to speak at TEDxManitoba because of the opportunity to share my “idea worth spreading”, and to learn from passionate and innovative thinkers.

What is your idea worth spreading?

While living/working in Mexico I survived a coordinated automatic gunfire attack by a suspected paramilitary group. In the months following the incident I began to ask myself – “What do you do after the bullets miss you?” My adventure began that day, and over the subsequent years of community leadership activities I learned through experience that when people realize the power of collaboration anything is possible. And when they don’t, all hell can break loose.

What’s your connection to Manitoba?

I’m a life-long Manitoban, U of M graduate & former Bison athlete, and have served as Chair of the U of M Alumni Association, Chair of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, President of the Winnipeg Art Gallery and on the board for Ka Ni Kahnichihk. I’m a die-hard Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bomber fan and I love this place we call home.
